(There are still Bugis pirates about, but now they will kill you and just steal the ship which is worth more than what they can get from you otherwise, but I digress).
The legend is that the Bugis pirates used to kidnap and/or kill babies, either on ship or when they came on shore in small towns. Kidnapping was done in order to exact a ransom and killing babies was done to exact gold and silver so they would go away and not cause more damage. If it turns out that the kids family had no money, they would either kill the kid, use it as slave labour or sell the kids as slaves.
Hence the common threat given to unruly kids by their British parents, "The bogie (or boogie) man is going to get you".
'Sound familiar?
Let's take a look at Biblical YHWH in the bible's book of Exodus.
Moses is told by a burning bush, that is supposed to be 'god', that he needs to go tell the Egyptian Pharaoh to let his people go and that YHWH will bring plagues on Egypt until he does.
But here's the squeaker.
The goal isn't merely to get the enslaved Jews freed. "The lord" said that he'll make sure they are not released until the last minute.
Why?
Two reasons are explained in Exodus by "the lord"/the talking shrubbery.
1. So that they will be terrified and "know that he is the lord".
2. So that the Egyptians will give all their gold and silver to the Jews so that they will leave. (Exodus 3:21-22)
(Sounding familiar yet?)
In fact, for one of the plagues, "the lord" sensed the need to harden the heart of the Pharoah so that he wouldn't be afraid and let Moses' people go, just so 'god' could make more plagues upon the (rich and not quite terrified enough) Egyptian people. Then 'god' killed the first born of the Egyptians and even the cattle. Yes, that's right, unless people had blood on their door facings, YHWH killed their first born, even the innocent babies.
(This is what "Passover" is celibrating, 'god's' terrorism, piracy and first born baby killing. Isn't that sweet?!)
So, keep this in mind the next time you're talking to one of the Borg Flock Collective, er, I mean one of the Christian soldiers, and they show signs of lobbing terrorist grenades as they retreat or sign off their futile email messages, composed of blather like, "You just wait, you'll see when you die and 'god', with great love in his heart will tear you asunder...", etc.
What these Moonies for Christ are really trying to scare you with is, "You just wait. One of these days you're going to turn the light out to sleep and the boogie man is going to get you! That'll teach you, you damned unbeliever!!"
