If the answer is 'no', then the Christian has a fundemental moral delemma. (Do whatever the "authorities" say because they are in power because of 'god'. To do bad is to object to what the authorities want and is going against 'god', and to do whatever the authorities want is to live smoothly becuase you are doing what 'god' wants). Before recorded law, vengence and retribution was viewed as a deterent for crime and was viewed as "justice", but manytimes the vengence was disproportionate to the crime. "Eye for an eye" was supposed to suggest a proportionate limit to the retribution. Jesus' sermon on the mount speach then is not changing the law in this respect, but rather saying 'don't seek the limit of the law, but rather forgive the infraction'. Another early Christian writing, The Ascension of Isaiah, depicts Isaiah being taken up through each level of heaven until he finally reaches the seventh heaven where he meets God. 20.
